This book takes an in-depth look at one company of airborne infantry soldiers posted to the dangerous & deadly Korengal Valley in the N/E Kunar Province of Afghanistan. Very gritty--very engaging. Junger takes a hard, deep look at many aspects of war and what it means to the men who fight it side-by-side, day-by-day. Some very perceptive insights into what makes a small group of people ready & willing to fight and even die for each other, if need be. It comes from deep within and clearly sets us apart from any other mammal.

Addendum: Watched Junger's "Restrepo" documentary that compliments this book. It was shot by Sebastian Junger & Tim Hetherington (who was recently killed filming in Libya). Very interesting/engaging docu that shows real life in a small platoon living/fighting in one of the most dangerous parts of Afghanistan (near the Pakistan border). You have to see the pictures to grasp the reality of the situation they are in (and the tough terrain/condition)--very, very tough. In fact, so tough that now the US has completely pulled out of the Korengal Valley where this docu was shot.
