Though somewhat academic, this was an interesting, insightful read on the various ways that Islam has been expressed & experienced by Central Asian Muslims. Gives some good background to the Sunni Hanafi school that has dominated Central Asia for so long, and how Islam was forced to adapt following the Bolshevik/Communist revolution in Russia (1917). Then a good section on the way the de-Islamisized region & peoples have fared since their separate independence from the Soviet mother ship and the impact of 9/11 ten years or so later. Hint--not well, given that the same sovietized/secularized cronies have been in power and have used the same old over-the-top fear tactics to suppress the "radicals" in the name of control & keeping power, some of them even with the U.S. as their partner along the way...
