Another good read by an author I've grown to like a lot. His novels are very character-driven, with lots of interior-space and psychological tension. Characters are thrown into & through some difficult situations, circumstances, and relationships--and then have to deal with the consequences and fall-out from their choices. Kennedy's writing style is smooth and keeps you turning the pages to find out how the main character--this being another of his first-person woman novels--will deal with everything thrown at them.

I mostly like Buechner, though he's usually a bit unorthodox at points. But he paints a vivid picture in this short book of the various phases of Jesus' life and the implication and impact He had & still has on our world today. The crucifixion and resurrection part are especially well done.

This book takes an in-depth look at one company of airborne infantry soldiers posted to the dangerous & deadly Korengal Valley in the N/E Kunar Province of Afghanistan. Very gritty--very engaging. Junger takes a hard, deep look at many aspects of war and what it means to the men who fight it side-by-side, day-by-day. Some very perceptive insights into what makes a small group of people ready & willing to fight and even die for each other, if need be. It comes from deep within and clearly sets us apart from any other mammal.

Addendum: Watched Junger's "Restrepo" documentary that compliments this book. It was shot by Sebastian Junger & Tim Hetherington (who was recently killed filming in Libya). Very interesting/engaging docu that shows real life in a small platoon living/fighting in one of the most dangerous parts of Afghanistan (near the Pakistan border). You have to see the pictures to grasp the reality of the situation they are in (and the tough terrain/condition)--very, very tough. In fact, so tough that now the US has completely pulled out of the Korengal Valley where this docu was shot.

Enger does it again in his follow-up novel to his amazing debut one, "Peace Like a River." Absorbing story and full-fledged characters romp through another older world the reader is sucked into. Just reading Enger's prose and characters' conversations and comments are so satisfying. Where have all the good writers gone?...

Pretty good book with some very valuable and practical advice/insight on what it truly means to be a godly/spiritual leader--and to also foster this attitude/outlook within an organization.

This was an excellent and interesting book on both the craft of writing and on the long journey a writer like Stephen King has taken in its wake. So cool that King has been a "Mainiac" since high school days in the Lisbon Falls/Brunswich area (near the place in Maine where I've previously lived). The book has some good wisdom and experiences King shares in a colorful and engaging way.

I really enjoyed this 2nd part of Anne Rice's planned trilogy on the life of Jesus--from Jesus' first-person perspective. She's done her homework on the historical setting and time-frame and does a good job of "filling in" a reasonable story into the empty spaces in the Gospels--as well as around the ones that are recorded. Can't wait till she comes out with the 3rd part.
