Book Review: Imprisoned in Iran

Reader Rating: 8/10

Salaams! Read this book back in September. My interest was piqued after going through the Security Training, deep in the wild woods of Idaho. I had heard snippets years ago about Dan and his imprisonment and was also interested in seeing what he had to say about it; e.g. how and why it happened, what were the repercussions, etc.

Very interesting read that gives you a frank and personal perspective into Dan and his fellow S. African traveler's imprisonment in the most notorious prison in Iran, the dreaded Evin Prison of Tehran. Dan was held, basically in solitary confinement, for nine weeks, accused of being a CIA spy. It was a very tough time, mostly mentally, as Dan began to think that he had been forgotten, abandoned, and might spend the rest of his life in a dark, dank, deserted cell. There are some good insights into the routines he did establish to keep himself occupied and hopeful, though there are also some very poignant points illustrating how the Enemy can bring defeat and discouragement to someone in that type of situation.

This incident also demonstrates the importance of something we were taught in Idaho TO DO if you are held by a government entity: continue to ask (demand), from the beginning, to see your government's representative (or a closely aligned country's rep). In Dan's case, this didn't really happen and most likely prolonged his case.

Book Description
My name is Dan Baumann and I have recently finished my book entitled Imprisoned in Iran. In 1997, a friend and me, while on a short trip to Iran were taken into custody. I spent 9 weeks in prison in the most infamous prison in Tehran, "Evin Prison". I was kept in solitary confinement, beaton, and constantly interegated. I received two unofficial death sentences, one for being a CIA spy and one for being a Christian witness. The story tells in detail how we went to Iran, how we were arrested, and how we were miraculously released. The story is written in an easy to read adventure narrative. It tells very honestly both the good and bad momments. Throughout the book it honors God as being the reason for going into Iran and the one behind keeping us alive in prison and eventually helping us get released.
